City of White Bear Lake, Minnesota
About White Bear Lake
The name "White Bear Lake", meaning habitation of the Great Spirit, came from the Indians. In an 1825 treaty, signed by six Indian tribes, a dividing line was agreed upon and White Bear Lake became a part of the area real estate, designated as Sioux territory.
The first settler was V.B. Barnum, a farmer from Connecticut. The first road was petitioned by Richard Freeborn, in June 1857. It was to start from Hamms Brewery (in St. Paul), to west of Phalen Lake, to east of Goose Lake, and following the shore of White Bear Lake to Bald Eagle Lake. The township of White Bear was organized on May 11, 1858.
On September 10, 1868, the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad officially opened an extension to White Bear Lake. Ten platform cars of 300 men and four passenger cars for 200 ladies made the trip from St. Paul.
White Bear Lake was incorporated as a village on February 18, 1881. The village’s population was 435 and covered 2 ¾ square miles, including water. On October 11, 1921, the voters then established a city under home rule charter. The city’s population was 2,022 and covered 2 ¼ square miles, including water.
In the 1950’s, the city was annexed due to the post-war building boom, resulting in the need for water and sewer facilities. The city’s population in 1950 was 3,646. In 1960, the population was 12,849 and covered 7 square miles.
In 1965, White Bear Lake was given the All-American City designation and awarded for progress in solving community problems and planning ahead to make their growth orderly. A special census, in 1965, showed a population growth to 19,042.
Today, the White Bear Lake area is comprised of a township and a city. The city of White Bear Lake has a population of 26,000 and covers 10 square miles. White Bear Township has a population of 11,800 and covers 9.3 square miles. It is the last remaining township in Ramsey County.
